There comes a time when you realise just how old you are and how you have changed. That came to me the other day. I think I may have outgrown my alter ego aka SkacorePrincess. As a result I have to the decision to take steps to finish this blog and make a fresh start on a new one.

Note to self: Modge Podge Leaves

Hey the other week I decided I wanted to try and make a beautiful bowl out of the autumnal leaves in their array of fabulous colours after finding this Modge Podge Leaf tutorial over at Gingerbread Snowflakes blog. Well it didn't quite go to plan. But I learnt something I never would have learnt if I hadn't made the mistake... ONLY MODGE PODGE ONE SIDE OF THE LEAF AT A TIME! It just gets stuck to the surface and when you remove it takes the nice shiny glue coating off and many of the leaves will break. Obviously I should have read the instructions before carrying on with my attempt. And the bowl well I used clingfilm to stop it sticking to the glass bowl but instead it just meant I was unable to remove the clingfilm from the leaf bowl. Bad times. Now it just looks like this....

Shiny, cracked, weird? That's how I'd describe it now it's complete well sort of. I will try again next autumn since for now the leaves have lost their reds, purples, greens, yellows and are more of a brown. Never mind I know for next time and hopefully no-one else will make the same silly mistakes I made.

Recycled Ring Pull Bracelet Tutorial

The other day I made this recycled bracelet using ring pulls (pop tabs as they are known in the US). I had some by a particular brand that were blue and silver so decided to make a bracelet that were reversible. Here's how I did it.
First you need enough ring pulls to fit around your wrist I used 8, and since it was reversible I needed to double that. So I used 16 ring pulls in total.

Things you need:
16 Ring Pulls
17 Split Rings
Needle nose pliers
1 Lobster clasp

1. To start with layout your materials (forgot to take a picture of this).

2. Take two ring pulls, one of either colour if using multiple colours. Lay one on top of the other so that the top side is facing out on both. Grab a split ring.

3. Take the split ring and split carefully. Insert through the largest hole of both ring pulls and close.

4. Repeat step 2 and 3, but don't close the split ring.
5. Take you second set of rings pulls and put the open split ring through the closed split ring. Make sure your coloured ring pulls are facing the same direction.
6. Take your rings pulls and add a split ring to the side of the rings pulls without a split ring. Now repeat steps 3-5 until you have something that looks like a chain like this.

7. Repeat the process until you have a chain of ring pulls and split rings that when laid flat looks like this. Now you simply add your lobster clasp and last split ring to either end. Voila, all done.

I hope you understood that, it's my first real tutorial with pictures and descriptions so fingers crossed it made some sense. If you have any comments on how I could improve tutorials in the future please feel free to share them.

I'd like to try and post one tutorial a week, so I need to get busy and actually get my bottom into gear. On that note I had better get dressed...

Oh dear... but look butterflies.

Oh dear, I've been bad. I've not blogged for a wee while. Tut tut. But in my defence I've been adventuring.

I've had some lovely days out with Seb on his days off. We went to London this week, very nice. Seb had a course at the Royal Geographical Society with work and being the Geography Geek that I am, I just had to follow him. Although I was a little gutted that he got to visit the RGS before I did, he's the Historian, I'm the Geographer. Perhaps I will try to commandeer the Royal Historical Society. I'll dress like a pirate and steal the many archaeological finds and historical journals and sell them on the blackmarket.... or not.

Whilst in London we went to a butterfly house which is currently located outside the Natural History Museum. Wow, it was fascinating. We came across a type of butterfly with transparent wings, really beautiful, stain glass like but with out the colour panels. AMAZING! We also had the opportunity to see GIANT moth, it was gorgeous a yellow colour with a very large silk cacoon. They only live for around 5 days and they don't have organs to eat, so they survive on the energy they built up as caterpillars. Quite amazing really.

Despite being a little freaked out to begin with, what with hundreds of butterflies flying around. I soon fell in love with the beauties. I took a few sneaky photos but due to the humidity in the tent my phone packed in. Boo. Here are a few of my favourites.

If you happen to be in the area, I definitely recommend a visit to the butterfly house, you won't be disappointed and kids will LOVE it.

Embroidery Hoop Wall Decoration

I really love the idea of decorating walls using embroidery hoops and fabric. When I came across this idea by The Purl Bee I instantly fell in love with idea and knew I had to give it a try.
I posted my first attempt at embroidery hoop wall decoration not so long ago, if you scroll down I'm sure you'll find it. I can't wait until I move into a new place so I can get crafting on creating more embroidery hoop beauty to cover the walls with. For now I'll leave you with my how-to over at Cut Out and Keep.

One-day-she'll-be-my-sister-in-law Wedding Hair Dilemma

With my one-day-she'll-be-my-sister-in-law's wedding on Saturday she's still not sure on how to do her hair. She's doing her own hair and is looking for a romantic, vintage style.

I had my hair in a vintage kind of style today where you wrap your hair around a headband bit by bit until you have this beautiful roll. The original idea came from Maria from the LipstickDiaries in her tutorial for creating curls without heat, but I thought that if I left some space at the front and used a pretty lace headband which I made some weeks ago I'd could wear my hair like this during the day.

FYI: This photo was taken at recently at a festival, so please excuse the lack of make-up, clean hair and beer cans (not mine may I mention, I'm a cider drinker)

My one-day-she'll-be-my-sister-in-law said she wanted something similar, except without the headband. We had a search around the shops and found a 'sponge thing' for creating Hollywood rolls, but it was extortionately priced for what it was. So instead of writing job applications I've been playing around creating different hair styles to see what I can come up with that is similar but without the need for a hairband. Whilst looking for inspiration online I came across the Gibson Roll. It's vintage, it's stylish and well it's just delightfully romantic.

This was my first attempt (on myself) at the Gibson Roll/Tuck not sure which one I've managed to create by definition, but I quite like it. With a bit of practice I'm sure I could make it neat and tidy for the bride, however I also like the idea of wearing it in the classroom. It's easy to do yet stylish and practical.

Anyway, back to the point I'm on the search for romantic and vintage hair styles that are similar to those above, if anybody knows of any please feel free to leave a comment and point me in the right direction for images, blogs, tutorials etc. I'm sure the bride-to-be would be most appreciative.

Three things I love...

I've had a busy week this week with little time for crafting. Had a job application to complete (boring) and went to a festival which despite the bands we saw being amazing the festival itself was well a tad weird.

Here's the three things I love this week.
1. The Skints
Firstly this week I love a band called The Skints. Whilst the entire band are wonderfully talented I have to say that Marcia Richards is one phenomenal women when it comes to musical talent. She plays the Saxophone, Organ & Melodica as well as vocals, swapping between instruments throughout their sets. If you like reggae, ska or punk I'm sure you'll enjoy The Skints, check them out their Facebook here.

2. Homemade games
Next I love the idea of making your own games whatever your age. Great idea to keep kids entertained or for a bit of party fun. I like this one with the homemade bean bags made from the pockets of old jeans. Check out the how-to here. How cool would it be to get kids involved in painting their own snakes and ladders or building your own giant draughts set for parties. I can't wait to have kids now... although do I really need kids to create my own games?

3. DIY chalkboards
Lastly I love the idea of creating your own chalkboards, there are just so many possibilities. You just need chalkboard paint and your ready, how cool is that. These are just a few of my favourite ideas for DIY chalkboards.

London Riots

Now I know this has nothing to do with crafting but it's a topic that is of deep concern to me. How can such a developed society justify the actions that have been experienced in London and small pockets around the rest of England? These selfish acts of violence and looting have been carried out with no regard for other people and the local community. The problems these actions will bring to so many already struggling families, couples, shops, business owners and communities, like they really need this in a time when everybody is finding it difficult to get by. The cuts affect most people in some way or another, but the rest of the country hasn't taken to looting and stealing from those around them, whilst destroying the local community and putting fear into the lives of ordinary people. Some people have lost their homes, their businesses and all so a minority of youths in the country can gain new possessions and live comfortably.

I saw a news report yesterday a women was telling the reporter about how she luckily escaped from her home but had to witness her possessions that she worked so hard for go up in flames, the only belongings she now has are those she had in her handbag. She had tears rolling down her face and you could see the anxiety and fear she was feeling through her body language and expressions, worst thing is she's not the only one; yet the riots continue!

Protests and riots in Africa are just about justifiable, people want democratic rights and freedom, here it's greed that has brought so much of this violence. When there are families in East Africa with just enough food, water and shelter to barely survive, how can people be out committing violent acts and looting just to get a better TV, mobile phone or even a bunch of flowers. Seriously what is wrong with society.

So long time no blog! I'm sorry life has been ever so hectic recently plus I've not had internet for over 6 months..... ah!
But I'm back and feeling chatty.

I made this bookmark for a friends birthday as I felt bad that she always folded the pages of her books. She says she uses it... but I'm still waiting for the evidence tehe. Any way I hope you like it, I know I did. I really didn't want to pass it on.

The last few months...

WOW! Since moving to Kent everything has been pretty hectic. Life isn't so great and we've a list of problems the size Mt. Kilimanjaro but still we paddle onwards and put it all down to experience. The one benefit of living here though in this land of pretentious-ness has been that it has made us realise what we really don't want in life. Money means little to us (luckily we don't have any) and it's the simple things that make us both most happy.

As a result of working so much and having a distinct lack of inspiration here I have found I've not done a great deal of creating... boo, however this is one of my little gifts for my friend back in the land of the great... Wales. tehe.

She has recently developed an interest in gardening (which was a suprise when she's a bit of a princess but in a good way). So for her birthday present (which was in October but she didn't get it till January) I made her this little seed box with pegs to keep her seed packets tidy and organsied.

Unfortunatly it's a bad photo as I took it on my phone. But thought I'd share the idea anyway.

So I've moved to Kent, completely the otherside of the country miles and miles away from home and..... still no job, home to live in or income..... ahhhhhh!!!! okay so we've not even been in Kent for a week yet so I really shouldn't be expecting to have had any job offers (despite the amount of applications I have already completed). But anyway the stress of no job, home or income has completely blown away any creative inspiration. The inspiration bit of my brain is just full of cobwebs... not nice ones either their full of dust and feel like they've been there for years, decades, centuries even. I need help. NOW. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Textile Street Art

I've fallen in love.
I absolutely adore some of the textile street art that's going on at the moment.
This little movement of indie crafters is fab.
I like it so much I reallllllly want to learn to knit.
Although with my inability to concentrate long enough to learn how to, I'm tempted to have a go in a different way, maybe using sewn art work instead.

I've finally made more than just one of these ring pull, bottle cap brooches. I've made a range of colours and think they are pretty cool.

Many people have commented on the plain silver one I made, many hadn't realised till closer inspection of what it were made of which I thought was pretty neat.

It's all just adequate

Some of my friends might remember just how much I used to love going to Adequate Seven gigs when they were around. I saw them a total of 24 times in about 2 and a half years in numerous places around the country. I always thought they were so much better live than recorded, they had so much energy and enthusiasm on stage which doesn't come across quite so well in recorded versions. As a result I'm really missing their shows infact live ska and punk in general.

I rarely go to gigs these days either because i'm working or it's bloody miles away and we have to travel for hours to get there and to get back. It's a shame as I really miss live music. I hope that when we move to Kent in septemeber Seb and I will start going to alot more gigs and start seeing other bands we enjoy more regularly. *fingers crossed*

Anyway that's all I've been thinking about.

All in a frame

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm taking part in a craft swap.
Here's my favourite craft item for the swap, Definately going to have to make myself one. It's a photo frame note board.I used a second hand photo frame I found in a charity shop and used fabric, ribbon and glue.
I went with the colours of the British flag and painted the frame white.

Slate Twist

I'm taking part in a craft swap on cutoutandkeep.net, the title is global village and the idea is you swap craft items and i few other bits that represent where your from.
I live in Wales, working at an eco-centre which is located in an old slate quarry.... so inspiration hit and i made this necklace using slate found on the site.
I wrapped wire around the piece of slate and used a used piece of leather for the necklace.

I love this button necklace I made just the other day.
I used some neutral buttons and some copper wire to create a small button pendant and attached this beauty to some hemp cord.
Nice and earthy, don't you agree?

Wish I could bottle the smell...

OMG I've just made an eggless chocolate and nut banana bread and wow the smell of it cooking is amazing. I just want to bottle it up.

Here's the recipe, try it yourself.

Recipe
150g caster sugar
50g butter/ vegetable spread (for vegan version)
1/4 cup applesauce
2 tablespoons water
5 mashed bananas
250g plain flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 handfulls of chopped nuts

1 banana chopped for topping

preheat over 180 degrees c
1) Beat sugar and butter until smooth
2) Beat in bananas, water and applesauce
3) In a separate bowl sive the flour, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder
4) Mix the dry mixture into the wet mixture, mis till moist
5) Add the cocoa powder and nuts
6) Place the chopped banana in the bottom of the loaf tin
7) Pour in cake mixture
8) Bake for approximately 1 hour or until an inserted skewer comes out clean
9) Leave in the tin to cool for 10 mins then turn out onto a wire rack
10) ENJOY!

Organisation...

Well I've finally finished my degree and I'm just waiting to get the results and graduate this July. I'm really excited but a tad scared about the future.
Anyway it's time I start crafting again, the only problem is I've been accumulating bits for crafting over the past few months and now I've a great deal of 'stuff' which I need to organise before I can feel truely comfortable enough to get down to some hardcore crafting.
I've been sorting my buttons in to relatively colour coded jars, darks in one, bright colours in another, whites in another and pastels in another. It really was quite relaxing. But now it's time for sorting my craft shelves and corner. AHHHHHH! It's real madness, I definately require a seperate room for crafting.

This is what I'd really love my crafting area to look like:

Little Miss Crafty has made such a beautiful craft area, I'd really like to transplant it into my own home.

But nope, I'd need a another room to ever make my crafting area look anything like that. So far it's just a mess of boxes, jars, tins, materials, findings and such composed around the living room whilst I attempt to sort it all.

Ahhhhh! Help! Any pointers would be very grateful, tehe.

Why is it that I have lots of inspiration and ideas for things to make, just at the point in time when I'm NOT ALLOWED to make anything or distract myself from revision.
I've my final year exams tuesday and wednesday next week and of course I'm busy reading hundreds of journal articles, writing lots of information down and learning lots of facts. However I keep having all these fantastic ideas for things to make and how I can improve my jewellery etc etc. and I'm not allowed to write them down, make them or continue thinking about them.
Booo. O well I can make away come a week today as all my uni work is complete, all I'll have to do then is wait for the results and hope I graduate with the 2:1 I'd really like. Yay.

Ring Pull Brooch

When I was younger, I used to drink way to much cider and as a result collected loads of ring pulls from cider cans. Last summer I found a whole bunch at home and came up with this brooch.

It is almost 100% recycled, the ring pulls, bottle cap, brooch back and string are all either rubbish or taken from old items I have. The only new thing used was the glue.

It was really simple to make and brings back many memories.

Tiger Tiger

So over the Summer 2008, I collected hundreds and hundres of bottle caps.

I've so many now I don't know what to do with the all.

Here's the very first bottle cap necklace I made.
It's made from completely recycled materials.

The bottle caps are obviously from Tiger Beer bottles, the silver hoops are part of an old belt chain and it was all held together using a keyring split ring and jump rings from old jewellery.

Laddered Tights

I've always kept my laddered tights with the thought in mind 'i'll find a use for these'. That's just what I've done at last.

Necklaces made from tights.

I was given inspiration for these from another blog where the girl had used a bright yellow pair and made a long necklace, but obviously i had to add my own style to it.

Really simple to make.

You need 2 pairs of tights, a chain and two hoops any size, depending how you want yours to look.

Cut the legs of the tights in to strips.
Tie one end to a hoop and gradually tie strips together till they are at the length you desire and tie to the other hoop.
Add beads and button as where you like.

Another Clothes Exchange

Yup, I am holding another of those events where women get together, strip off their clothes and swap.... haha. Not really.
I'm sure people these days understand the concept of clothes swaps, since the popularity of such giggle fests are becoming increasingly popular.

The last one I held was December 4th 2008, unfortunately the student union double booked and the clothes swap got changed to a date that I was unable to do. I did cancel the event however I had to deal with so many disappointed persons that luckily SALT (my workplace) came to the rescue and said we could use upstairs. Phew. So I had to redo the posters and get them out just 5 days before the event. Luckily however we managed to attract 30 odd people, raising a total of £68 for WasteWatch.

Hopefully with better preparation and advertising we may make a little more for WasteWatch this time around.

I'm looking to get either an acoustic artists/band to provide some entertianment and shall think up some activities to get people chatting. I'm hoping this time there might be some cat fights for entertainment purposes. tehe.

Well this is it...

Yup, this is my first blog, welcome.
Not entirely sure what to start off with so let's start with a little about why I've finally set up a blog. Here goes...

I study geography and have a real passion for the sustainability of our planet. March 2008, I took some time out of uni for personal reasons until this Feb, it wasn't a good time for me, but I feel I've really found myself as a result. My passion for sustainability and reducing my environmental impact has grown immensely and working at the centre for alternative technology really helped. I've always been quite creative but summer 2008, I decided to start making jewellery and other bits and bobs out of recycled materials. Using everything, ranging from bottle caps to old vinyls, buttons to juice cartons and everything in between.
I've become such a horde, since I now envision everything in a different light and am constantly thinking what I can do with the things I have to recycle or throw away.

I absolutely love it.

So basically the aim of my blog is to encourage others to think creatively about everyday objects and to share some of my ideas and creations with others.

Thanks for reading my blog, I hope you come back and the future will provide us all with plenty of ideas.
